Michelle Lujan Grisham, our newest New Mexico federal elected official, our 1st District congressperson, is spending the week eating like someone has to eat if they're on food stamps, or Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program, SNAP, which is going to be severely slashed pretty soon unless congress and the president intervene. She posted a picture on her Facebook page today and wrote:
"Lunch on the first day of my SNAP Challenge - can of tuna, an apple, and tap water. This is what $1.50 per meal buys. I can't imagine what it must be like to live on this budget month after month. This shows why we can't cut SNAP benefits."
I'm not holding my breath waiting for her to talk about the root of the problem, Capitalism, the Neoliberal form it's taken and the failure of Democrats to resist it, their complicity in it, but compared to what the rest of the New Mexico Democratic delegation is doing this week, and spends all their their time doing, it's pretty remarkable. I don't have the time or inclination to look around and find out what they actually are doing that's not like what she's doing, which I've done time after time on this blog, but I can guarantee you that they're doing it, and talking to their constituents in that infantile, condescending politico-babble full of cliches about the American people and how they're standing up for them.
Compared to them all, Martin Heinrich, Tom Udall, Ben Ray Lujan, this, what Ms Grisham is doing, trying to bring attention to the plight of some people, trying to stir up some support for us doing something about it, is mind blowing. She's leading. They're not. It's fantastic.
